Alain Gauthier, Executive Director

Evolutionary co-leadership is an integral form of leadership that is responsibly dedicated to the co-evolution of life and humanity on Planet Earth. Evolutionary co-leadership development requires individual inner work (symbolized in the picture by the smaller and higher lake) and outer collective work (symbolized by the larger lake on the horizon). Both types of developmental work involve head, heart and body (the three sides of the triangle), as well as deepening the connection to one’s Core or Source (the central point).

New concepts and forms of leadership are emerging in a number of organizations and communities around the world, in response to the multiple crises we are facing and to the need for radical rethinking of our prevailing development model. They include shared, distributed, or collective leadership – called here co-leadership – that emphasizes interpersonal influence, dialogue, and mutuality, and considers leadership as a relational process rather than a position. Such leadership engages simultaneously in top-down, bottom-up, diagonal, and circular change processes. It also cuts across boundaries to generate open innovation that involves suppliers and customers as partners, or to address complex challenges of sustainable development by forming partnerships across companies, government and civil society.

Co-leadership challenges the traditional distinction between leaders and followers. The practice of co-leadership produces direction, alignment, and commitment as means to attain longer-term goals. Each co-leader examines their beliefs about both individual and collective leadership and engages in practices – such as mutual adjustment, shared sense-making, collaborative learning and tapping collective intelligence – that will generate a new leadership culture (for further undertanding of these points, please refer to the articles : Integral development of evolutionary co-leadership, Educating evolutionary co-leadership to embody a new development paradigm, and Emerging concepts and forms of integral leadership).
